Antonio Chella is a Full Professor of Robotics at the University of Palermo, and Director of the Robotics Laboratory at the Department of Engineering. He founded and is the dean of the Robotics Engineering degree program. He was Director of the Department of Computer Engineering and the Interdepartmental Center for Knowledge Engineering at the University of Palermo. He is an Honorary Professor in Machine Learning and Optimization at the School of Computer Science at the University of Manchester, UK. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, Letters, and Arts of Palermo, and has received the James S. Albus Medal from the BICA (Biologically Inspired Cognitive Architectures) Scientific Society for outstanding scientific contributions. He founded and is the editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Machine Consciousness, now the Journal of Artificial Intelligence and Consciousness, published by World Scientific Press.
He coordinates research projects in Italy, Europe, and the United States. He is the author of more than 200 publications in the fields of artificial consciousness, robotics, and artificial intelligence. Professor Chella's scientific research activities have been featured in articles and interviews in national and international newspapers and magazines, including Corriere della Sera, Repubblica, The Guardian, and The New York Times.
